How Telemetr.com measures Telegram channels

Methodology updated:

What we count
Subscribers, average views, ER by views, subscriber growth and ranking position of public channels.
Where the data comes from
The public surface of Telegram: subscriber count and views of recent posts. We have no admin access to any channel.
How often we update
Collection runs continuously with no fixed per-channel schedule: every figure on a channel page carries the date of its measurement. No date means no measurement.

Measured vs estimated

Measured: a number we read from public Telegram data and stored with a date. Estimated: a number derived from indirect signals. We never present an estimate as a measurement: it is labelled "estimate" or not shown. If there is no measurement the page says "no data", not zero. Right now, for some channels average views are an estimate from channel size (8% of subscribers), not a measurement from posts. We are removing such values from rankings and comparisons and adding a measured/estimated flag to the data; until that is finished, reach in some rankings may include an estimate.

Metrics

Subscribers

The count Telegram shows on the public channel profile.

We read the count and store a dated snapshot.

Large channels show a rounded value; we store it as shown. Owners get exact numbers in Telegram's official analytics. It is a point-in-time value, not a live counter.

Average views (reach)

Typical reach of one post.

Median views of the channel's last 20 posts (fewer if the channel has fewer). The median is used so a single viral post does not skew the result.

Views keep growing after publication, so very fresh posts understate reach. The value counts as measured only when posts were read.

ER by views

The share of subscribers an average post reaches.

Average views ÷ subscribers. It is not reactions or comments: true ER from reactions is visible to the owner only.

Used only for channels with ≥ 10,000 subscribers and measured views, because the ratio is noisy on small channels. Good for comparing channels of similar size, not for judging a single channel.

Growth

Change in subscribers over a window (1, 7 or 30 days).

(subscribers at the last snapshot in the window − at the first) ÷ at the first. Needs at least two snapshots and ≥ 100 subscribers at the start (≥ 1,000 in the 30-day growth ranking), otherwise the percentage inflates. Abnormal jumps (above +100% in a day, +300% in 7 days, +1000% in 30) are excluded as outliers.

Growth cannot tell real subscribers from bought ones.

Rankings

Order of channels by the chosen metric within a language and category.

Channels without scam/fake flags are included. Category is our own label from the channel title and description (Telegram publishes none); language is detected automatically from the title and recent posts.

Category and language can be wrong. Channels without a determined category do not appear in category rankings.

Audience quality

An estimate, not a percentage of bots.

A traffic light (reliable / mixed / questionable) from open signals: reach to subscribers, ER stability between snapshots, growth spikes, Telegram flags, channel age and size.

We cannot see who the subscribers are. "Questionable" is a reason to look at the channel yourself, not a verdict.

Known distortions

Bought subscribers and views, bots and inactive subscribers are not separated from real ones. Reposts and ad buys can lift views once. Private channels are invisible to us. Telegram's rounding limits precision on large channels.

What we do not have

Subscriber age, gender and exact geography are visible to channel admins only. We may show an estimate of audience region and label it as an estimate. We do not compute a citation graph.
